What to Pack for a Sleepover: The Mom Checklist

April 29, 2026  ·  Sleepover Club, Timonium MD

A pastel sleepover packing flat lay with pajamas, toiletry bag, sleep mask, and water bottle

It is Friday afternoon, the sleepover starts in two hours, and your daughter is throwing things into a duffel bag with the kind of confidence that means she has packed three pairs of leggings and no toothbrush. You can either fight that battle every time or you can hand her a list once.

Here is the list. It is organized in the order she will use the things, which is the only way packing lists actually work for tween girls. Everything she actually needs. Nothing she does not.

The Bag and What Goes On First

Start with the bag itself. A small duffel is the right size: big enough for one night, small enough to fit on a closet floor at someone else's house. Skip the rolling suitcase. It signals "this kid is high maintenance" before she even walks in.

Then load it in the order she will use it. Pajamas on top, because that is the first thing she changes into. Toiletry bag next. Outfit for the morning at the bottom. Done.

The pajama set matters more than you would think. A cute matching set is the kind of thing tween girls notice and remember. If everyone shows up in old soccer t-shirts and one girl has a coordinated set, the coordinated set wins the night.

The Sleep Setup She Will Actually Use

Most kids do not need to bring a sleeping bag to a sleepover at a friend's house. Most kids do. The kid who shows up with her own sleeping bag, pillow, and sleep mask is the kid who actually falls asleep. The kid who borrows everything is the kid who lies awake.

Get a real kid-sized sleeping bag, not the polyester roll-up you have had since 2016. The FIOBEE one is the sweet spot: light enough to carry, warm enough for an air-conditioned house in May, and cute enough that she will not roll her eyes when you hand it to her.

Add a small travel pillow. Not because the friend will not have pillows, but because hers smells like home, and that single detail is the difference between sleeping at someone else's house and sleeping at someone else's house.

The sleep mask is the underrated piece. Tween bedrooms are a lot brighter than they should be at 11 p.m. (phones, nightlights, the hallway lamp the parents leave on). A sleep mask is the difference between three hours of sleep and seven.

Worth knowing: Pack the sleeping bag and pillow on top of the duffel, not at the bottom, so she does not have to dig at her friend's house. Tween girls hate digging through their bag in front of other girls. They hate it almost as much as they hate the idea of asking for help.

The Just-in-Case Stuff That Saves the Night

The forgotten-something panic at 9 p.m. happens at every sleepover, and the kid who packed for it is the kid who looks like a hero when she pulls out the spare. None of these are expensive. All of them get used.

A reusable water bottle is the first one. Friends' houses never seem to have enough cups, and the kid who brought her own water bottle does not have to ask. The Owala kid bottle is the one with the cult following: 115,000+ five-star reviews, leakproof, looks like the Stanley dupes the older girls carry.

A small pack of individually wrapped disposable toothbrushes solves the inevitable "I forgot my toothbrush" moment. Three for the price of one decent regular toothbrush. Bonus: the friends always need one too.

And one small surprise item that is fun, not practical. A Tamagotchi. A little toy. Something to bring out at the bedtime wind-down moment that gets the girls talking. The kid who pulls out something delightful at 11 p.m. is the kid whose name everyone remembers the next day.

The Stuff to Skip

Equally important: what NOT to pack. The duffel should be lighter than your daughter thinks it needs to be.

Good to know: The unwritten rule: nothing she would be sad to lose. Sleepovers create the perfect conditions for leaving something behind. If it would break her heart to forget at the friend's house, do not pack it.

Why a Packing List Matters

The kid who packs well is the kid who has a good sleepover. The kid who shows up with the right stuff is the kid the host mom invites back. None of this is about being fancy. It is about being prepared without being precious.

If you want the sleepover host side handled, that is what we do. Sleepover Club delivers fully styled teepee sleepover setups to your home in Timonium, Towson, Pikesville, and the surrounding Baltimore County areas. The host job gets easier. Your daughter still has to pack her own bag.
